TV, radio, internet, newspaper or magazine – there’s always a new message about how to lose weight. What’s behind these messages and who presents them? Sometimes it’s valid science and sometimes it’s hype by celebrity endorsements. People with obesity are often influenced by these media messages, and they ask their health care providers about them. People with obesity often blame themselves for lack of success after using these ineffective “potions.” This session will discuss how these messages are crafted, how patients process these messages, and how providers can communicate about these issues in a way that empowers patients to choose safe and effective weight loss strategies.
