In addition to substantial weight loss, there is a growing and considerable body of evidence that bariatric surgery is associated with improvements in a number of cardiovascular outcomes. The purpose of this symposium is to provide an up-to-date overview of the impact of bariatric surgery on non-weight outcomes and illnesses including heart failure, atherosclerotic disease, and arrhythmias.
Educational Objectives: • Provide a brief summary of the impact of different bariatric procedures upon short and long-term weight loss. • List a minimum of four cardiovascular conditions substantially improved by bariatric surgery. • Summarize key evidence from 1-2 studies of the impact of bariatric surgery upon heart failure, atherosclerotic disease, and arrhythmias. • Summarize current evidence related to mechanisms, apart from weight loss, through which cardiovascular conditions are improved through bariatric surgery.
