Session Overview and Target Audience
This symposium will discuss the poignant and in some cases, controversial topic, of how defining narrow weight goals may be counterproductive. We will also discuss how focusing patients’ attention on non-weight related outcomes may improve adherence to new health behaviors that are associated with improved quality of life in the long run. The target audience includes multidisciplinary providers of patient care, general surgical, medical, and integrated health professionals.
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Distinguish of the benefits of using a weight-neutral approach with patients.
- Discuss non-weight based intervention techniques to use with patients.
- Review key non-weight based outcomes to assess in post-operative weight loss surgery patients.
- Explain the importance of physical activity independent of weight loss in weight loss surgery patients.
