Integrated Health: Bariatric Surgery is Behavioral Surgery: Novel Strategies to Motivate Healthy Behavior Change in Patients

Session Overview and Target Audience

This symposium will focus on novel behavioral and psycho-social intervention strategies (including practical “take home” applications for providers) to counter barriers to healthy behavior change after bariatric surgery. The target audience includes all providers who work with bariatric surgery patients including integrated health professionals and surgeons.

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the problem of suboptimal adherence to postoperative behavioral recommendations.
  • List common cognitive and emotional barriers to healthy behavior change.
  • Describe applications of acceptance and mindfulness-based strategies to counter cognitive and emotional barriers to healthy behavior change.
  • Identify uses of technology to assist patients and their providers in motivating healthy eating and physical activity habits.
