Course Overview and Target Audience
The intent of this course is to review common key topics associated with the perioperative care of the bariatric patient, to include all integrated health professionals involved in patient care. At the end of this course, one should have a better understanding of the clinical as well as nonclinical aspects pertaining to the bariatric patient, and how to handle these key perioperative issues. The target audience is intended for all integrated health professionals.
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Identify what others are doing to manage post-operative nausea immediately after sleeve gastrectomy, a common, widespread problem.
- Assess what happens in the OR, from positioning to medications used, and all other important key factors one should highlight during the time in the room.
- Develop an understanding of what to look for in the immediate post-operative period, when to be concerned, and how to treat those concerns effectively.
- Interpret knowledge about the use of antidepressant and anti-anxiety medications in the perioperative period and how it affects outcomes for the bariatric patient.
